Hot In The City: Keeping Your (Wardrobe) Cool At Work

The morning alarm sirens and in your groggy 5am (OK 6am) haze the only indicators of the day to come are the orange glare of early sunlight, and the all too familiar onslaught of uncomfortable humid air.

It’s going to be a hot one.

When you’re dealing with temperatures that feel something like 30° in the shade (add an extra 10° for that super fun bus and train commute) the motivation to stay comfortable while pulling off something akin to professional attire, wears paper thin. I’m here to tell you, or sort of console you, that it is possible, but you need to make preparation your good friend. Keep it light with fabrics that breathe and accessories that work magic to doll up an everyday t-shirt.

Take notes, these three smouldering summer work looks are a cinch to execute on any summer morning- no sweat.

When you feel like the ambient heat from Mars is radiating around your building, take your cues from those clever Martians who’ve likely been dealing with it longer than you. Futuristic silver and opal have a remarkable knack for blasting everyday basics into another style stratosphere. Key learning? Add a structured, longline vest, like this one from Veronica Maine, for a sleek, 100% work-appropriate version of Barbarella.

The Big Easy

The materialisation of smart-casual-cool is an enclosed leather espadrille, at least by my book. This version from David Lawrence is prim enough that you are suitably dressed next to a suited-up colleague, yet comfortable enough for sweltering days when your diary demands you remain on the go. Reminder, for days when you’ve got a mission to accomplish, the balancing act of attempting to remain stable in heels made slippy from sweat will knock your confidence quick smart.

Boiler Suit Dreams

Jumpsuits are sorta like those times you are running late for a 9am WIP, only to be saved by a blessed boss who gets stuck in traffic and reschedules for 9:30. Boring analogy, but so are team WIPs. Point being, jumpsuits are a summer get-out-of-jail-free card that needn’t be reserved for sulky toddlers. You gain the privilege to throw on just one piece of clothing that doesn’t cling, doesn’t pinch, and makes you look like the modern professional you know you are – most days.
